Small Scale Mechanics

We study size effects typically in the shape of thin films or cylindrical small scale specimen. Recently, more complex 3D structures are being introduced that also encompass strain gradients. In thin films stress-strain curves as a function of chemical composition (alloying), microstructure and film thickness are being obtained by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and reflectance anisotropy spectroscopy. Special focus is put on yield phenomena and fracture. In the latter case fracture morphologies are investigated in detail. In addition conventional nanoindentation is being performed

The pillar geometry allows for strain-rate dependant experiments both at high and low temperatures.
